Two S. Korean pitchers sign with agent Boras, eying major leagues

Two premier South Korean pitchers have signed with a famed U.S. baseball agent, eying opportunities to play in Major League Baseball.

Yoon Seok-min, a right-handed starter for the Kia Tigers in Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), and Ryu Hyun-jin, a left-hander for the Hanwha Eagles, have joined with agent Scott Boras.

A founder and owner of Boras Corp., Boras represents a slew of major league All-Stars, including Alex Rodriguez, Prince Fielder and Matt Holliday. South Korean Choo Shin-soo of the Cleveland Indians is also represented by Boras.

Yoon, 25, said Monday he wanted to prepare early for a possible career in the majors.

"I felt that in order to realize my dream of pitching the majors, I couldn't just get by with enthusiasm and that I needed to do something systematically," the pitcher said. "I signed with Boras during this past season. I am getting some relevant information from him and it's been very helpful to figure out where I stand in the big leagues."

Yoon and Ryu have been among KBO's best starting pitchers in recent seasons and were integral parts of South Korea's national team that won the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and finished second at the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

Yoon had the best season of his career in 2011, leading the KBO with 17 wins, 2.45 earned run average (ERA) and 178 strikeouts for a pitching triple crown. Ryu, 24, won the league's most valuable player (MVP) and rookie of the year awards in 2006 and won the triple crown that season. He holds the KBO record for the most strikeouts in a season by a rookie pitcher with 204. Ryu has led the KBO in four of his first six seasons.

Under the KBO rule, a player becomes eligible to be posted for overseas leagues after seven seasons in Korea, with interested clubs submitting their bids during a silent auction. The player's original team will receive the bid money as a sort of transfer fee.

A KBO player can declare free agency after nine years, at which point players are free to test the market.

Yoon just completed his seventh KBO season and is thus eligible for posting. Ryu is one season behind Yoon.

The Eagles' stance on Ryu's signing with Boras wasn't immediately known. The Tigers, however, said they will not allow Yoon to leave this offseason. Team manager Sun Dong-yol said the Tigers need Yoon to win championships.

"He will be a free agent after two years," Sun said. "It will be okay for him to prepare as much as he can and then go overseas."

Yoon acknowledged he hasn't yet discussed his future with the club and said he would not specifically talk about his goals before sitting down with team officials.

Boras is known for winning lucrative contracts for his clients.

윤석민 '보라스 사단' 전격 합류

추신수와 한솥밥..메이저리그 진출 도전

프로야구 KIA 타이거즈의 에이스 윤석민(25)이 '꿈의 무대'인 미국프로야구 진출을 염두에 두고 메이저리그의 거물 에이전트인 스콧 보라스와 손을 잡았다.

윤석민은 7일 "일찍부터 목표로 삼은 메이저리그 무대를 꼭 밟으려면 의욕만 갖고 있기보다 체계적으로 준비해야 한다고 생각했다. 그래서 올해 시즌 중 보라스 측 과 직접 계약했다"고 말했다.

이어 "메이저리그에 대한 정보를 보라스 측으로부터 얻고 있으며 빅리그에서의 내 위상을 확인하는 등 상당한 도움이 되고 있다"고 덧붙였다.

윤석민이 메이저리그에서도 손꼽히는 에이전트인 보라스와 계약하면서 미국 진출 도전이 본격적으로 막을 올린 셈이다.

2008년 베이징올림픽과 2009년 월드베이스볼클래식(WBC)에서 대표팀의 주축 투수로 이름을 날린 윤석민은 일찌감치 일본 무대보다는 메이저리그 쪽에 초점을 맞췄 고 메이저리그에서 큰 영향력을 행사하고 있는 보라스를 협상 파트너로 삼았다.

지난 2005년 KIA 유니폼을 입고 프로에 데뷔한 윤석민은 올해까지 7년을 뛰었고 구단의 승낙을 받아 포스팅시스템(비공개 경쟁입찰)을 거쳐 해외에 진출할 자격을 얻었다.

KIA 구단이 윤석민의 해외 진출을 흔쾌히 허락해 메이저리그 또는 일본프로야구 구단과의 이적료 협상에 나선다면 윤석민은 당장 내년부터 미국에서 뛸 수 있다.

그러나 상황은 결코 녹록지 않다.

KIA 구단은 여러 경로를 통해 팀의 최고 보물인 윤석민의 해외 진출을 현재로서 는 허락하지 않겠다고 밝혔다.

구단이 불가방침을 고수하면 윤석민이 해외로 나갈 방법은 없고 2년을 기다려야 한다.

2년 후 자유계약선수(FA) 자격을 획득하면 구단의 허락이 없이 윤석민은 자유롭 게 국내 및 해외 구단을 새 둥지로 물색할 수 있다.

이런 사실을 잘 아는 윤석민은 보라스와의 계약을 인정하면서도 미국 진출에 대 해서는 조심스러운 태도를 나타냈다.

윤석민은 "구단과 해외 진출에 대해 아직 어떤 논의도 벌이지 않은 상황에서 속 내를 드러냈다가는 나는 물론 구단에도 좋지 않은 영향을 끼칠 수 있다"면서 조만간 이와 관련한 태도를 정리해 구단과 협상할 뜻을 내비쳤다.

새로 KIA의 지휘봉을 잡은 선동열 감독도 팀에 잔류할 수 있도록 윤석민을 설득 하겠다고 말했다.

선 감독은 "우승을 위해서는 윤석민이 꼭 필요하다"면서 "윤석민이 일본 미야자 키 마무리 훈련에 참가하면 내 해외 진출 경험을 토대로 허심탄회하게 대회하겠다"고 밝혔다.

그는 "석민이는 2년 후 자유롭게 팀을 이적할 수 있는 FA 신분이 된다. 철저하게 준비해 해외에 나가는 것도 나쁘지 않다"고 말해 당분간 팀의 기둥 투수와 함께하고 싶다는 바람을 우회적으로 나타냈다.

한편 내년 시즌이 끝나면 7시즌을 채워 윤석민처럼 포스팅시스템을 거쳐 해외에 나갈 수 있는 한화의 괴물투수 류현진(24)도 보라스 사단에 합류한 것으로 알려져 귀추가 주목된다.

류현진은 미국과 일본 진출을 동시에 겨냥하고 있는 것으로 전해졌다.

보라스는 선수에게는 거액을 안겨주는 '천사', 구단에는 필요 이상의 거액을 뽑아내는 '악마'로 알려진 메이저리그의 특급 에이전트다.

평균연봉 2천750만 달러로 메이저리그에서 최고 몸값인 알렉스 로드리게스(뉴욕 양키스)가 보라스의 고객이며 추신수(29•클리블랜드 인디언스)도 보라스 사단의 일 원이다.

박찬호(38)가 2002년 로스앤젤레스 다저스를 떠나 텍사스로 레인저스로 이적하면서 받은 5년간 6천500만 달러라는 메가톤급 계약을 성사시킨 것도 보라스였다.
