IKEA secures site to enter Korean market

Swedish home furnishing giant IKEA said Tuesday it bought a building site in Gwangmyeong, a satellite city of Seoul, as part of preparations for the opening of a store in two to three years.

“I am very happy to announce that IKEA took a historical step today in investing in one of Asia’s most dynamic lifestyle markets,” Korea chief Patrick Schuerpf said in a statement.

“We see this as a great partnership opportunity with the government of Gwangmyeong city, and we are looking forward to enabling Korean consumers to create a better everyday life in their home by bringing them well-designed and functional home furnishings at low prices.”

The site IKEA Korea secured in Gwangmyeong is 78,198 square meters in size and will be completed by 2014, the company said.

'이케아' 韓 1호점 광명서 2년후 오픈

세계 최대 규모의 가구ㆍ주방ㆍ생활용품 제조업체인 '이케아'가 KTX 광명역세권에 한국 1호점을 개설한다.

양기대 광명시장은 27일 광명시청에서 기자회견을 열고 '이케아'가 KTX 광명역 주변 도시지원시설 용지 7만8천198㎡를 낙찰받았으며 오는 29일 LH와 매매계약을 체 결한다고 밝혔다.

'이케아'는 2014년 광명역세권에 한국 1호점을 개설할 예정이다.

'이케아' 판매점이 문을 열면 300∼500명의 정규 직원과 건설, 운송, 택배, 조 립 등 간접고용 효과가 발생할 것으로 시는 전망했다.

또 매년 수십억원의 세수가 확보될 것으로 보여 시 재정 운용에 큰 도움을 줄 것으로 기대된다.

시는 '이케아'가 수도권에 한국 1호점을 낼 것이라는 소식을 듣고 양 시장이 이케아 코리아 대표이사와 임원 등을 만나 입지여건을 설명하는 등 유치를 추진해 왔 다.

양 시장은 "광명시에 글로벌 기업인 '이케아'를 유치하게 돼 기쁘다"며 "앞으로 긴밀한 협조체계를 구축해 지역사회와 '이케아'가 동반성장할 수 있도록 노력하겠다 "고 말했다.

스웨덴에 본사를 둔 '이케아'는 전세계 26개국에 287개 점포(직영기준)를 운영 하고 있는 글로벌 기업이다.
