Samsung, LG unleash tech prowess

Global companies unveil new products as technology trade show CES kicks off in Las Vegas


LAS VEGAS ― The 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show kicked off here on Tuesday with more than 20,000 new consumer technology products to be launched at the world’s biggest industrial trade fair.

Industrial giants, including Samsung and LG Electronics, Intel, Microsoft, Sony and Qualcomm, are taking part in the show, holding global press conferences at nearby hotels.

Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics both featured their 55-inch organic light-emitting diode display televisions for the first time, stressing that it is the “ultimate TV.”

Yoon Boo-keun, Samsung’s TV chief, said its updated new TV lineup presents a significant change and that the TVs will push the boundaries for all devices like laptops, cameras and home appliances.

“This is only the start to many signature services to come,” he said at the firm’s global press conference at the Venetian Hotel on Monday, local time. “Promise goes beyond what is available today. Smart TV will get smarter every year and you will never be left behind by pushing boundaries. Samsung is delivering the future of smart TVs today.”

Scott Ahn, the chief technology officer at LG Electronics, also introduced the company’s own 55-inch OLED TV, which uses a slightly different technology compared to Samsung’s model at LG’s global press conference.

“It’s the world’s largest and lightest OLED TV, which is 3-D capable and paper slim,” he said.

He also showcased LG’s Google TV, which the company hopes will be a popular choice for many customers, especially in the U.S.

“Learning from the latest Google TV software, coupled with Google TV platform, we have created a future core relationship with Google,” said Ahn.

The 2012 International CES, organized by the Consumer Electronics Association, is the world’s biggest annual technology trade show which is attended by thousands of global names in the industry.

On a related front, Microsoft’s chief executive Steve Baller, Qualcomm’s chairman Paul Jacobs and Paul Otellini, president and chief executive of Intel will deliver keynote speeches on Tuesday, local time.
