A pair of contestants from the popular reality show “Big Brother” was scammed by a con man into spending months shooting a bogus reality show, according to news sources in Britain.

Fifty-one-year-old serial con man Selva Carmichael lured former reality TV celebrities Mario Marconi and Lisa Appleton into appearing in the fake show “Lisa and Mario: Their Journey” last year. This allowed him to swindle money from investors who thought they were investing in a promising production company.

Marconi and Appleton rose to brief stardom when they appeared on “Big Brother” in 2008, but their fame has faded since then. Carmichael, posing as a media tycoon, promised Marconi and Appleton that the documentary-style show would jumpstart their celebrity careers again.

The couple was forced to endure an intense filming schedule, during which they were forced to be in front of a camera 18 hours a day and only allowed two to three hours of sleep.

“He (Carmichael) was pressuring us all the time,” said Appleton.

Carmichael’s boasts of turning them into celebrities never materialized, and Marconi and Appleton decided to leave his agency after he failed to sign with a national television show.

By producing the show that never had a chance of being aired on TV, Carmichael was able to garner investment which he used to fund his lavish lifestyle. The con man lived with his wife in a 725,000 pound ($1.16 million) home in Buckinghamshire, and drove an Aston Martin.

Carmichael is currently serving a three-and-a-half-year prison term on a separate fraud charge involving Santander Bank.

그가 이와 같은 사기극을 저지른 이유는 TV쇼를 미끼로 투자금을 위해서였는데, 그는 이렇게 얻어낸 돈으로 72만5천 파운드 (한화 약 13억원)에 달하는 집에 살고 고급 승용차 애스턴 마틴을 타고 다니는 등 사치를 부린 것으로 알려졌다.

카마이클은 현재 다른 사기혐의로 징역 3년 6개월 형을 받고 복역하고 있다.

마르코니와 애플턴은 몇 개월 동안이나 보수를 한 푼도 받지 못하고 하루에 18시간이나 촬영하고 2~3시간밖에 수면을 취하지 못하는 등 혹독한 취급을 받았다고 한다. “(카마이클은) 항상 우리에게 부담을 줬어요”라고 애플턴은 말했다.

그들이 이렇게 쉽게 속아넘어간 데는 2008년 당시 “빅 브라더”에 출연하면서 맛본 인기 때문이었다. 마르코니와 애플턴은 인기가 계속 식어가자, 연예생활을 이어가기 위해 필사적이 되었던 것으로 알려졌다.

그러나 방송국과의 출연 계약을 하는데 실패하는 등, ‘유명하게 해주겠다’는 카마이클의 호언장담이 허풍인 것으로 알려지자  둘은 그의 기획사를 떠났다.
