Local mobile carrier LG Uplus demonstrated its FemtoCell system, which both supports Long Term Evolution and Gigabit Wi-Fi technology, at the Mobile World Congress running this week in Barcelona.

Developed jointly by LG Uplus and Samji Electronics, FemtoCell is a small base station designed to enable fast and stable telecommunications service in crowded areas such as coffee shops, Internet cafes or small stores where data traffic is concentrated. This technology provides high-speed Internet services within 100 meters from the device.

“FemtoCell is able to provide a stable LTE network service in the 800-megahertz band even when data traffic surges,” an LG Uplus official said.

By adding Gigabit Wi-Fi modules, the network can offer data transfer speeds of 1 Gbps, which is three times faster than conventional Wi-Fi service.

“The devices will be installed in major cities including Seoul, Busan and Gwangju from this March,” LG Uplus said in a press release.

The company’s move to demonstrate technologies with its small and medium partner companies at the global information technology event is expected to give low-profile companies a leg-up in the global market.

“We will endeavor to develop communications equipment and make a foray into overseas markets in collaboration with our partner companies to pursue mutual growth,” said Cho Chang-gil, head of LG Uplus’ Technology and Development Center.

LG Uplus said it would continue to support its partner companies in terms of both technology and finances to help them grow and improve its global image.
