Samsung Electronics launched its consumer solid state drive powered by 3-D V-NAND 850 PROat the Samsung SSD Global Summit in Seoul on Tuesday. The company said it planned to launch the new SSD early this month in 53 countries including South Korea, the United States, China and Germany.

This marks the first time Samsung has unveiled a consumer SSD powered by 3-D V-NAND following the launch of its enterprise SSD in August.

“With the new 850 PRO V-NAND SSD, Samsung is introducing the next major evolution of SSD technology, taking the lead in delivering high-density SSDs with outstanding endurance, performance and energy efficiency,” said Unsoo Kim, senior vice president of Samsung Electronics’ brand product marketing team, at the event.

The company has unveiled four types of V-NAND-based SSD 850 PRO 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB.

The Samsung 850 PRO offers a dynamic thermal guard feature, which helps maintain an ambient temperature to prevent potential data loss caused by overheating.

Jim Elliott, Samsung’s vice president of memory marketing, said, “In a data explosion era, 3-D V-NAND SSD will be a solution to key IT concerns with lower power, higher performance and higher endurance.” He predicted that 50 billion devices would be connected by 2020.
