[Newsmaker] Typhoon Mitag to strike southern Korea this week

Typhoon Mitag is forecast to hit the southern region of the Korean Peninsula this week, according to the Korea Meteorological Agency on Sunday.

The weather agency said Mitag is expected to make landfall on Jeju Island on Wednesday morning before making its way through the country’s southern and central regions. By Thursday morning, Mitag is predicted to reach waters 120 kilometers west of the Dokdo islets.

Formed off the east coast of the Philippines, Mitag was reported to be traveling northwest at 21 kilometers per hour as of 3 p.m. Sunday. The typhoon’s central pressure was 985 hectopascals, with a maximum sustained wind speed of 104 kilometers per hour, or 29 meters per second.

A weather agency official said the typhoon will gather strength as it passes through high-temperature seas. By 9 a.m. Monday, Mitag, currently classified as “small,” will develop into a medium-intensity typhoon, the official said.

Mitag will be the seventh typhoon to affect Korea this year, setting a record for the highest number since 1959.
