Samsung C&T has completed the construction of a 118-story skyscraper in Malaysia, the second-tallest building in the world, the company said on Thursday.

The construction and trading firm under Samsung Group held an opening ceremony on Wednesday for finishing Merdeka 118, a 679-meter complex building in the central area of Kuala Lumpur.

“Samsung C&T has solidified its leading position in the high-rise construction sector through completing both the world’s first and second tallest buildings,” an official from Samsung C&T said.

In 2009, Samsung C&T completed the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building that stands at a height of 828 meters in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates.

Merdeka 118, with a total floor space of some 673,900 square meters, is a multipurpose building that houses offices, a high-end hotel and a shopping mall, it said, adding the amount of steel bars used in the building's construction measures at about 40,000 kilometers.

An observation platform will be also established at the top of Merdeka 118, which is expected to become a landmark, according to Samsung C&T.

With the completion of Merdeka 118, Samsung C&T has also cemented its position in the Indonesian construction market.

In 1998, Samsung C&T built the 452-meter Petronas Twin Towers in the same city. It used to be the highest building in Malaysia. Since then, the company has built several other high-rise buildings in the country, the company said.
